These services are a vital lifeline for women and children fleeing domestic abuse. However, the proposed funding changes sparked widespread concern, with charities like Women’s Aid warning of severe consequences. With refuges already facing underfunding, the changes risked forcing many to close or drastically reduce capacity.
Katie Ghose, then Chief Executive of Women’s Aid, described the move as one that would “dismantle our national network of lifesaving refuges and put the lives of women and children trying to escape domestic abuse at risk.”
